About Us - AAPSM & Education

One of the primary goals of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine is to be an educational organization. Every year the Academy sponsors an Annual Meeting which attracts sports medicine speakers and participants from across the country. Along with the Annual Meeting, the Academy sponsors or assists with a number of other sports medicine State or Regional seminars relating to diving, skiing, and specialized activities.

The Academy also sponsors a Fellow-In-Training Program for graduate podiatric physicians who have an interest in podiatric sports medicine and would like to gain invaluable hands-on practice experience.

The Academy also recognizes the role podiatric medical students play in the future of sports medicine. AAPSM Sports Medicine Days at the podiatric medical colleges have met with great success and appreciation by the students and faculty. At such programs students learn practical sports medicine information and are introduced to the AAPSM.

The AAPSM has successfully educated other sports medicine groups on the purpose of podiatric sports medicine. The following list of liaisons have been created by the Academy over the last few years:

Educational Mission

The most important function of the AAPSM is its role in the eduction of its membership, the profession of Podiatric Medicine, other health care professionals and the public. For many years this role has been well performed by the organization as a whole and by the individual members. Our Newsletter, Annual Meeting, regional meetings and special seminars such as the Diving Seminar and Munich Meeting have all served to disseminate valuable information to both the public and to sports medicine specialists. This role is augmented by the AAPSM web site and social media. Selected articles from the Newsletter will be available for both the general public, other specialists and the membership of the AAPSM. This should enhance the educational mission of the AAPSM.

Objectives

The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine has a series of major objectives:

1. to provide and stimulate programs for research and education
   
2. to promote and encourage publication of research findings and other literature pertaining to podiatric sports medicine
   
3. to provide a consultative service for those persons engaged in sports medicine
   
4. to increase awareness of the medical profession, sports population, and general public to the profession of podiatric sports medicine and modalities available to those who participate in sports
   
5. to coordinate student chapters and to acquaint the podiatric medical student with the needs and demands placed upon athletes

These measures have proven successful over the years by reaching out to podiatrists, other practitioners, athletes, trainers, physical therapists, students and the public. It has been through all of these collective efforts that the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine has been able to realize its goals and continue to set new ones.
