I hope you are staying healthy and sane in this unprecedented time. Most of our practices have
been impacted. I know my practice is at about 50% of normal. I’m trying to “reboot” myself by
enjoying the time at home, running, walking my dog and unfortunately binging on Netflix!
Hearing stories of grace has been inspiring. After I complained about not having toilet paper,
my assistant brought me a big package that was sitting on my desk the next day. All the many
nurses and doctors working in the hospitals nonstop around the globe is truly amazing.
My biggest hope from this pandemic is that all of us will start taking better care of each other.
Getting enough sleep, exercising and eating “clean” are pillars of good health. If we embrace
these habits, our individual immune systems will be primed for anything that comes our way.
It’s been wonderful to see all the families riding bikes, going for walks or just exercising
outside. Maybe this will become the “new normal” and we can enjoy nature and the improved
air quality.
Stay healthy and strong!
Best,
Jimmy
The AAPSM places the highest value on the health and wellbeing of its membership. Considering new developments in the rapidly evolving COVID-19 outbreak, the AAPSM Executive Board and Meeting Committee has decided to postpone the 2020 Sports Medicine of the Foot & Ankle at Green Bay Course scheduled for May 15-16 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Our goal is to reschedule this unique opportunity for next year.
As of now our AAPSM Stand Alone Committee is reviewing all options for our upcoming AAPSM Stand Alone/50th Anniversary Celebration scheduled for October. Please watch Social Media and our website at www.aapsm.org for updates.
AAPSM at Olympic Trials in Atlanta
American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine (AAPSM) Fellows Jay Spector, DPM, Brian Fullem, DPM and Amol Saxena, DPM attended the 2020 US Olympic marathon trials in Atlanta, Georgia in late February as very interested spectators. The trio treated dozens of athletes that qualified for the race via time (2:18 for men and 2:45 for women) including men’s champion Galen Rupp who spoke in the press about his successful Haglund’s surgery performed by Dr Saxena in 2018.
As a side note the 2nd place men’s finisher Jake Riley also had Haglund’s surgery in 2018, so if your patients ask about getting back to sports after Haglund’s surgery point towards 2 of the US marathoners that had the surgery a little more than a year before they made the Olympics.

AAPSM Past President Alex Kor Recommends
Foot Stretches for Sore Feet
“Pain is the biggest red flag,” says AAPSM Past President and Fellow Alex Kor, DPM. Dr. Kor is also the spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association. “Pain is not normal. Unless a patient has no sensation to their feet (from neuropathy), a patient should not ignore foot pain and should see a podiatrist.” If your discomfort is more of the sore and aching variety, though, there are plenty of easy sore feet remedies, feet stretches, and foot exercises to get your toes back in walking shape. Towel foot stretch - Dr. Kor recommends doing this stretch in the morning prior to getting out of bed. Sit with one leg bent and your foot flat on the floor. Place the other leg straight out in front of you, with your knee straight. Then, place a towel around the ball of your foot to pull your foot toward the knee. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat five times and then switch feet.

Dr. Alex Kor
Standing calf stretch - Do this stretch in the evening, Dr. Kor recommends. Face a wall. Place both hands about chest level on the wall. Place one foot about six inches from the wall, and the other foot about 12 inches behind. Bend your front knee and bring it toward the wall with both feet flat and pointed straight. The back leg should be straight. Slowly move your hips forward, until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds. Do five times.

California School of Podiatric Medicine
By Pats Limcaoco
Last November 2019, members of the AAPSM student chapter at the California School of Podiatric Medicine (CSPM) had a student-led workshop on "Athletic Taping Techniques for Common Sports Injuries", which served as an introduction to students on the basics of athletic taping. Students got hands-on practice learning low-dye, ankle, and various toe tape jobs.
In January members of our AAPSM student chapter participated in the American Podiatric Medical Student Association Basketball Tournament. CSPM Women's Basketball team took home the championship!
On March 1st, AAPSM student chapter members volunteered on the medical team for the Napa Valley Marathon and Half Marathon, led by Dr. Ed Lopez. Chapter members assisted runners who were injured or who needed medical attention.

As we face uncertainty in our lives, the AAPSM Stand Alone Committee has been discussing the current situation for our upcoming AAPSM Stand Alone/50th Anniversary Celebration Meeting.
In order for our Committee/ Executive Board to make a proper decision, we are asking all our members to complete the survey that was sent out on March 25, 2020. Please indicate if your plans include attending the meeting at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, Washington October 9-11th, 2020.
The Committee has considered alternatives and we will make a final decision that is in the best interests of the membership of our Academy. The AAPSM Executive Board and the Stand-Alone Committee feel that the camaraderie of the annual Stand-Alone Meeting is very important and if we are unable to meet this year, we hope to resume the meeting in 2021.
We are also exploring the possibility of offering online CME Webinars, that would be presented live and then archived on our members only site.
Please continue to check social media along with our website at www.aapsm.org for updates. Please know that we are doing everything we can to keep things as normal as possible – especially in the weeks and months ahead.
