President's Message - Mike Donato, DPM
|

Recently Tim Dutra, Rita and I attended the Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science meeting in Kansas City, Missouri. It was a great opportunity for the AAPSM to network with other sports medicine societies in North America. A couple of thoughts from the meeting are that we are a small association and that our role in the sports medicine world is not clearly defined.
As a small sports medicine association, it is imperative that we utilize contributions from as many of our members as possible. We are Sports Medicine Podiatrists with varied backgrounds and experiences. All of our voices need to be heard. We encourage you to share your experiences and expertise with our membership. Bill Russell said, “The most important measure of how good a game I played was how much better I made my teammates play.” The AAPSM needs to work together to improve each other and Podiatry as a whole. That in no way implies that we must always agree with each other.
An ACFAS past-president once lamented to me that he felt that after his time on their board he felt like he was pushed aside and no longer valued. We need all of our members to continue to contribute to “your” Academy. The board would like to thank Bruce Williams for volunteering his expertise by creating a presentation to be used for the APMA meeting this coming summer. He will also be working with our shoe sponsors to create useful content for our members and students to feature on our website and social media sites.
While networking with other sports medicine society members in Kansas City it became apparent that they don’t fully understand what we do. They recognize terms like CAQ-SM (certificate of added qualifications in Sports Medicine), Sports Medicine Fellowship Trained and Team Position Statements. Honestly, in our world becoming a Fellow of the AAPSM means that we’ve achieved the ultimate Sports Medicine Credentials in Podiatry. The availability of a CAQ-SM from the American Board of Podiatric Medicine has meaning when we interact with other Sports Medicine Societies. We are in the process of drafting a Team Physician Statement.
Tim Dutra is exploring the possibility of creating several mini-fellowship programs that would be Podiatry school based with different emphases, such as CSPM using its Biomechanics/Motion Analysis lab as its core. Obviously this will take time but man it could be awesome! We currently have four full Sports Medicine Fellowships.
The one consensus we had with other Sports Medicine societies is to utilize each other’s members in various webinars. This would be a great opportunity for us to showcase our expertise. We would like to have a “bank” of topics and lecturers to offer to these societies. Also, whenever there is a Podiatry meeting with an AAPSM Sports Medicine track it is highly attended and lauded. If you have a topic you’re passionate about and would like to be considered to speak at any level reach out to Rita or me and we’ll look for opportunities for you.
Best Wishes,
Mike

AAPSM Past Presidents Get Together
|

AAPSM Past Presidents (L to R) Drs Jay Spector, Howie Osterman and Matt Werd were all in town recently to catch a Washington Wizards game. Special thanks to Dr. Osterman-team podiatrist for the Wizards - for making this get together possible! |
AAPSM Fellow Learned Sports Injury Agony the Hard Way
AAPSM Fellow John Connors, DPM became a podiatrist for a simple reason. He grew up an athlete and knew the pain of injuries, and wanted to help others. “I just knew I was passionate about working with athletes from the get-go,” said Dr. Connors. “I understood the industry and I was positive that I was cut out for this kind of work. It’s all about knowing the trade and knowing how to treat the people that come into your office seeking help.”

“During my days in high school, I played different sports and broke various bones,” Connors said. “I have had a lot of sports injuries and have been in and out of surgeries as a young man for as long as I can remember. That time of my life really prompted my interests in sports medicine and becoming a doctor at an early age. I had a lot of experiences that required me to undergo surgeries, as well as rehab, physical therapies, and working with athletic trainers. In the end, I figured I was the most knowledgeable person to diagnose and treat other athletes like myself because of my past. It just made sense.”
Aussie and AAPSM Past President Study the Cause and Treatment of Friction Blisters
Australian podiatrist Rebecca Rushton, BSc(Pod) recently collaborated with AAPSM Past President and Fellow Douglas Richie, DPM to study the cause and treatment of friction blisters on the feet. Their work produced two manuscripts which have been accepted for publication in the Journal of Athletic Training. According to Dr. Richie, “The fact that friction blisters on the feet remain the most common injury in sport and recreation activities verifies that we do not fully understand the underlying cause. Our papers propose a new paradigm for causation which validates and refutes certain popular preventive treatments for blisters.”

Doug Richie, DPM
The two manuscripts are available for preview at the Journal of Athletic Training's Online First platform:
"Friction blisters of the feet: A new paradigm to explain causation"
"Friction blisters on the feet: A critical assessment of current prevention strategies"
AAPSM Past President and Fellow Has Passion for Houston Rodeo Volunteer Work
AAPSM Past President and Fellow Jeffrey Ross, DPM, began his rodeo volunteer journey years ago, starting with the medical committee, which tends to guests and visitors with cold and flu symptoms. He rotated after a few years onto the Breeders and Greeters committee, where he greeted and assisted livestock show exhibitors as they prepped to show their animals. That same season, he joined the safety committee and served as a liaison between livestock show performers and EMTs who handled injuries and emergencies.

Dr. Jeffrey Ross
After nearly a decade-long hiatus, Dr. Ross came back to volunteering and joined the international committee in 2016. The coveted committee requires an interview and completing a rookie year to ensure a spot the following years. The group welcomes out-of-town visitors, assists with registration, and serves as interpreters for international guests.
AAPSM Fellow features Simon Bartold/
New Osteochondroses Growth Injury Research
Dr. Simon Bartold presented new research on osteochondroses growth injuries in children on Fit Foot U hosted by AAPSM Fellow Ben Pearl, DPM. Dr. Pearl moderated the interview. Three key points were reviewed. First, children have transient osteopenia in pre-puberty which results in more risk for osteochondroses injuries during that period. Second, new data shows that osteochondroses injuries are site-, gender-, and age-specific; and some can carry over into adulthood. Finally, physical maturity can be more important than the age of children when considering the overload forces that can cause injury.

Dr. Pearl added that this highlights the importance of nutrition such as vitamin D levels and the potential for stimulating bone with electromagnetic therapy during these injury-prone periods. Appropriate loading and sports selection are paramount for children's sports participation. |

Day 760. January 16, 2023. Two years and running. It started during Covid inspired by my significant other, Jenna, who was doing a Covid challenge called “75 Hard”. It was a demanding daily challenge I was not interested in however, I said if you do that, I will run every day to support you. And that’s how it started.

Doug Tumen, DPM
I have been a runner throughout my entire adult life. I have completed 9 marathons and countless races over the years. I just never had a streak. In fact, I always advocated not running every day. My advice to my patients was it’s not a good idea to run every day. Take one or two rest days each week. Cross-train or just let your body recover. So, prior to now, the longest “streak” I remember in over 40 years of running was 6 days in a row...

Bone Stress Injuries in Runners Using Carbon Fiber Plate Footwear
|
By: Adam Tenforde, Tim Hoenig, Amol Saxena, and Karsten Hollander
The introduction of carbon fiber plate footwear has led to performance benefits in runners. The mechanism for these changes
in running economy includes altered biomechanics of the foot and ankle. The association of this footwear with injuries has
been a topic of debate clinically, but not described in the literature. In this Current Opinion article, illustrated by a case series
of five navicular bone stress injuries in highly competitive running athletes, we discuss the development of running-related
injuries in association with the use of carbon fiber plate footwear...
