In my last newsletter, I said I will discuss how one can get good mentors. This is important in all aspects in life, as well as a medical career. It may be someone who inspired you to pursue your career, a teacher, relative or some type of coach. While some people look for “successful” people to inspire and motivate them, keep in mind “success” is a variable term with different meaning to different people. What I look for is someone is knowledgeable and willing to help you. A mentor often will have the same values and perhaps even similar goals. They don’t have to even have the same degree. I also look for people who are willing to continuously improve themselves.
One of my mentors is John Grady, DPM, my teacher and residency director, and also one of my closest friends. He recently took and passed the AAPSM Fellowship exam. Now, he’s been in practice over 35 years, but he took on the challenge. How many DPMs would take the requirements and exam at this point in their career? That is a sign of how great a mentor and role model he can be – my mentor took an exam 27 years after I did...

For 2017 Excellence in Athletic Training Award

Kevin Johnson
The American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, the largest sports medicine affiliate of the American Podiatric Medical Association, is pleased to announce the recipient of our American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine/National Athletic Trainers Association Excellence in Athletic Training Award for 2017. Congratulations to Kevin Johnson for his meritorious service in the field of podiatric sports medicine and athletic training. This award will be presented to Mr. Johnson at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association annual meeting in Houston, Texas at the NATA general session beginning at 3 pm on Wednesday, June 28, 2017.
Mr. Johnson has over 22 years of experience in the field of sports medicine, and will be returning for his 11th season with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers staff as the team’s head athletic trainer. He joined the Sixers organization at the beginning of the 2003-04 season. A member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA), Johnson spent seven seasons as the head athletic trainer for the Washington Wizards (1994-95 to 2000-01) and four seasons as an assistant trainer with the Indiana Pacers (1990-91 to 1993-94). Prior to joining the NBA ranks, Johnson served as an assistant athletic trainer for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts...

AAPSM Fellow Warns - Flip-Flops Cause You to Curl Your Toes Excessively
Summer sunshine often means sleeveless tops and shorter hemlines, but it also heralds the re-emergence of another seasonal staple: the flip-flop. The strappy sandal — and its distinctive slap on floors or sidewalks — has been a mainstay in American culture for decades, but its ubiquity has been bemoaned by podiatrists and other experts. Many say the flip-flop is a particularly poor option to keep your feet shod during the summer, pointing to common injuries like stress fractures or blisters that plague many wearers during the warmer months.

Dr. Howard Osterman
AAPSM Fellow and Board Member Howard Osterman, DPM told the Washington Post - “When you only have something between your toes to keep the shoe on, you have to curl your toes excessively”. “You have to spend all day firing your muscles to keep the shoe on the foot.”
AAPSM Members featured at Ontario Society of Chiropodists Scientific Seminar
AAPSM Members Dr.’s Kevin Kirby and Louis DeCaro lectured at the Ontario Society of Chiropodists Scientific Seminar held recently in Tornoto, Canada. Lectures and workshops on podopediatrics, pelvic equilibrium theory, advanced wound healing topics, tissue stress theory, gait analysis, running footstrike, medial tibial stress syndrome, pediatric and adult flatfoot disorders, custom footwear, and total contact casting completed an excellent mix of clinically useful topics. Approximately 200 attended the lectures and workshops at this annual seminar organized by the Ontario Society of Chiropodists and the conference chairs, Drs. Shannon Frizzell and AAPSM member Dr. Greg Lawrence.
AAPSM Member - Louis DeCaro, DPM Delivers Commencement Address at BUSPM
AAPSM Associate Louis J. DeCaro, DPM, President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Pediatrics (ACFAP) and Barry Class of 1999 alumnus, recently gave the Commencement address to Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine (BUSPM). Dr. DeCaro stressed three key themes for becoming a successful podiatric physician. 1) Never listen to the naysayers, 2) how passion breeds success, and 3) the importance of empathy when dealing with patients. Dr. DeCaro also told the story of his own journey into the field of podiatric medicine, and how and why he has specialized in podopediatrics. This year's graduating class achieved something unique and impressive. They achieved the “Podiatry Trifecta.” 100% pass rate of Boards Part 2 both written and clinical, and a 100% residency match!
Dr. Amol Saxena chose to pursue a degree in podiatric medicine because he’s a runner and
he wanted to treat runners. He sees podiatry as a laser-focused skillset, a chance to relieve
suffering, an opportunity to perform and to help others perform at peak level.
“Most of my patients don’t need surgery but if they do, they get back to sports,” Dr. Saxena
said. “As an athlete myself, I understand how important it is to recover from injury and achieve
your goals...”
